Attorney Michael Sterling, 41, was arraigned in April on a DUI charge in a rear-end crash that occurred on Feb. 4, 2022, in Sandy Springs, Georgia, RadarOnline reports. Sterling plowed his 2011 Ford Mustang into the back of a Toyota Camry driven by Cody Clark, 26. Clark was injured along with passenger Lauren Hammett. He claims the Mustang came on them so fast that the impact spun his car into a concrete median.

When police asked Sterling what happened, he allegedly replied, “he didn’t know.”

“He said that he was going too fast to keep from hitting the other vehicle. He said that the vehicle came over to his lane and he hit it,” the police report stated, according to Radar.

“I asked Sterling if he would submit to some voluntary field sobriety evaluations and he said no,” the officer stated in the report. “I asked him why not and he just replied, because ‘I am an attorney.’”

Sterling faced misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving. He pleaded not guilty in Fulton County State Court on April 26 through his lawyer William Treadwell. As Radar reports, Sterling denied driving under the influence, citing a medical condition that causes his eyes to be red and glossy on the night of the crash.

Sterling was treated at a local hospital after the crash and according to his lawyer, none of the emergency room workers noted that he was inebriated. However, as Radar reports, the crash report states: “Sterling was wearing (a Covid-19) mask, but as he spoke to me, I could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.”

Clark filed a civil lawsuit against Sterling, claiming he “slamm[ed] directly into the rear of [the Camry], causing it to spin out of control until it collided with the concrete median on the right side of the road,” per the documents obtained by Radar.

Clark and his passenger suffered multiple injuries and their medical bills cost more than $2,000.

Sterling’s attorney wrote a letter to prosecutors in April 2022 noting that “the accident occurred on a rainy night on a highway with ongoing construction.”
