Why Your Doctor Might Be Reading Your Blood Pressure Incorrectly | WATCH

*Experts warn that the one-size-fits-all blood pressure cuff used by most doctors’ offices could harm your health.

Researchers report in a new study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine that standard blood pressure cuffs are delivering “strikingly inaccurate” readings for patients with larger wrist sizes and those who require different sizes.

The accuracy of blood pressure readings is crucial in diagnosing conditions like high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

According to clinical guidelines, it’s best to use a cuff that is sized to the individual’s arm, the New York Post reports. Midsize cuffs are most often used by medical professionals and are typically the only size offered with at-home blood pressure monitors.

In a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine researchers, 195 adults with a wide range of mid-arm circumferences were tested for blood pressure.

Blood pressure readings were consistently low for those requiring a small cuff. The blood pressure measurements of those who needed a large or extra-large cuff were significantly higher with major errors.

Per the study, “Using a regular BP cuff size for all individuals regardless of arm size resulted in strikingly inaccurate BP readings with an automated device; a renewed emphasis on individualized BP cuff selection is warranted, particularly in individuals with larger arm sizes.”

“We were shocked at how big of a difference there was,” lead study author Dr. Tammy Brady told CNN. “I didn’t expect the magnitude that we found.”

The researchers recommend patients and providers get properly educated about the use of blood pressure cuffs – and avoid public kiosks.

“It can have really significant clinical implications,” Brady said.

Exercise is considered one of the best ways to lower blood pressure, along with losing weight, quitting smoking, and eating a healthy diet.
