*(Los Angeles, CA) Several hundred Angelenos gathered on the Upper East Deck of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza (3650 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. 90008). The occasion was the triumphed return of South LA Power Fest, on Saturday, September 16, 2023.
A light drizzle couldn’t damper attendees’ resolve to venture out to enjoy a fun day of music, food, and empowerment sessions in an atmosphere of good vibes.
Marsha Mitchell, Senior Director of Communications, and a team of friendly staff members from Community Coalition welcome everyone attending the festival on this beautiful, sunny, and cool day in the greater Los Angeles area.
Marlo Jaye served as Emcee, introducing the various DJs, special guest speakers, empowerment sessions, and live performance acts.
DJ Abstrkt was first on deck with the ones and twos. His eclectic soundtrack set the stage for the day to the delight of the dancers’ vibing in the crowd.
Crenshaw High School Band got the program off to a rousing and thunderous start. Mr. B is the Head Band Director, and Chris Hollister the assistant Band Director. The program consisted of a performance by Cougar Lites, a dance squad, under the direction of Curare Ashley-Dance Director, a fantastic drumline, Jessandre Byrd, Percussion Director and AC assistant band director, and horn section.
DJ Adé and KG Superstar of Utopia Tribe manned the ones and twos to keep the party going much to the delight of the crowd. If the music moves you, you gotta move and groove.
İBAILE! Featuring DJ Dina and CQuest took it up a notch to liven up the proceeding with a soundtrack of global rhythms- Reggaeton, Dancehall, Dembow, Baile Funk, House, Afrobeats, Amapiano, Hip-Hop and more. I’m sure that you are dancing just by reading the above list of music genres.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee was on site to deliver a brief encouraging and uplifting message of hope to a captivated crowd of attendees.
Power Fest was hosted by Community Coalition. South LA Power Fest was more than a festival; each iteration of the event makes a profound statement of solidarity, with dialogues, and actions to address the critical issues affecting the South LA community and a way to support local visionaries. South LA Power Fest is also a celebration of community and culture and a campaign to transform the social and economic conditions of the community. Attendees left the festival feeling rejuvenated after an engaging, educational, and empowering day. Empowerment sessions consisted of Going Forward While Looking Back: The Power of Our Stories; South LA is Still Home: Black and Brown Permanence; and Reimagining South LA: A Conversation on the Issues While Collectively Envisioning Solutions.
Buyepongo cranked up the throttle with a high-octane set of infectious cumbia rhythms along with a cohesive mezla of global beats and additional picante flavors of Central and South America.
DJ Roxcizzle of Utopia Tribe rocked the ones and twos into the early evening. DJ Roxcizzle playlist served as a perfect segue to the headlining performance by Fatimah Warner, aka, NONAME. NONAME dazzle the crowd with her fluid flow of poetry and spoken word performance to cap off another successful iteration of South LA Power Fest.
Power Fest succeeded in creating an event for attendees to embrace diversity and foster unity, which was reflected in the multicultural and diverse crowd on site.
