*A language arts teacher in California was filmed repeatedly using the N-word in class. The unidentified classroom instructor also tried to force students to say the racial slur.
According to The Daily Beast, the incident occurred at Sequoia Middle School—part of the Fontana Unified School District. The teacher dropped the N-word during a discussion about a Mark Twain novel. A student allegedly asked how to spell it, and that’s when the teacher snapped, ABC 7 Los Angeles reported.
An anonymous student recorded the moment and presumably shared the footage on social media. One student told the outlet, “The teacher got in front of the class and she was saying that the word is just an English word and everybody can say it if she wants to.”
The teacher allegedly said, “people are oversensitive over the word.”

“She was trying to force him to say the word,” the student told ABC 7. “She repeatedly kept saying it and she had a smirk on her face.”
In the video, the teacher is seen standing in front of the class and encouraging a male student to repeat the slur. “Say it. N—–,” the teacher says with a smile. “Why? You’re asking me, so go ahead and pronounce it: N—–.”
The student remains silent as the teacher continues to taunt him.
“Pronounce it after me,” she says. “N—–.”
One of the teacher’s students told ABC 7 that the teacher uttered the slur at least 15 times.

Fontana Unified School District told ABC 7 in a statement, “While we acknowledge that this derogatory language comes from a novel first published in the late 1800s, and that historical context is important to consider when discussing literature, the district does not condone the language that was used in the video or using that language outside of the context of discussing the novel.”
