THE REAL: Oscar Winners Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver Stop by – VIDEO

*On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the hosts of The Real discuss former NBA star Dwyane Wade’s upcoming documentary in which he discusses having fathered a child with another woman while on a break from his relationship with his now-wife, Gabrielle Union. Co-host Jeannie Mai admires his bravery in discussing the topic, while co-host Adrienne Houghton asks if, in less than ideal circumstances, if you would still choose to be with your partner.

Then the hosts welcome Matthew A. Cherry & Karen Rupert Toliver, Academy Award-winners for Best Animated Short Film, Hair Love. Karen discusses the fact that she is the first black woman to win an Oscar in any animation category, and the two explain what motivated them to make a film about hair prejudice.

And the ladies Hit Reply to viewers questions and comments, and Jeannie reveals what (she thinks) the mysterious writing on her hand was in a recent episode of The Real!

The Hosts On Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union And Choosing To Stay With Your Partner

Jeannie Mai: I was awestruck by his bravery to open up about that subject. Because we all know that situations that happen between two people are their business; it ain’t ours. But to actually step out and talk about that, that transparency is refreshing. And I actually really started to take a different look because they’re friends, but I started to take a different look at how this couple is sharing their personal life stories. When Zaya came out trans, and the way that they welcomed Zaya into the world – that is a very challenging situation, that again, we don’t need to know about the insides of their family. But they are teaching a lesson here about unity, and solidarity…

Jeannie: …and just communication as a family. That is beautiful to me.

Loni Love: I think also, for me, the message is, it was a breakup. It wasn’t a break. This is a breakup. They weren’t married, and the whole point is, when you break up… things happen. So…

Adrienne Houghton: Have you ever seen the episode of Friends where Rachel and Ross were on a break? “It was a break! We were on a break!” I think that is important to clarify that as well. That is an important thing. I actually this weekend got to hear Bishop T.D. Jakes talk, and preach and I actually shared with Amanda something that I took away from it, and it was about relationships and putting aside the things that matter – the things that don’t matter – and recognizing the things that do matter.

Adrienne: I think when people get married, they view it sometimes as, “Ok, we’re choosing to live a life together,” but he actually shared that his wife, Serita, said when she married him, it was not just about living their life together, but choosing who she wanted to die with. And that really spoke so deep to me, to me, that was so profound on multiple levels, because if you were given a circumstance that’s not ideal, which in life that happens, you have to question – would you still choose that person to lay in a bed with. When you are dying the things that really matter to you are who really love and who you want by your side. And everything that doesn’t matter, you like throw away. You’re like, “Oh my gosh, ok, that happened, but I still choose him, I still love him, he’s still my purpose partner, he’s still who I want to ride,” you know, to ride with.
