*They talk about the dog days of summer but rarely about the dog days of winter. January is considered the dumping ground for a lot of films. Let me just say that my first film for this year was “Escape Room,” and I did want to escape the screening room.

Then there was  “A Dog’s Way Home” which, ironically, is the best yet. The touching tearjerker, directed by Charles Martin Smith, stars Jonah Hauer King, Ashley Judd, and Alexandra Shipp. Kevin Hartand BryanCranston’s “The Upside,” directed by Neil Burger, has its moments—and some laughs. Let’s just leave it at that and not talk about the downsides.

Opening this week is “Glass,” the conclusion to the “Unbreakable” trilogy. Bruce Willis reprises his “Unbreakable” character in “Glass,” as well as Samuel L. Jackson. James McAvoy introduces his multiple “Split” personalities in “Glass.”

In M. Night Shyamalan’s surreal final saga, we find David Dunn (Willis) on the streets of Philly hunting for Kevin Wendell Crumb (McAvoy), who embodies The Best and 22 other identities. Crumb continues to hunt and kill young women. When apprehended by Dunn, they both end up in the Raven Hill Memorial Psychiatric Research Center where they interact with Elijah Price (Washington), a key ingredient to the story’s plot.

Although “Glass” has a great premise, it doesn’t quite see its way through to execute a worthy conclusion. And an excess of antics—even though McAvoy is a fine actor—reaches the point of diminishing returns.       Twitter: @thefilmstrip.
