Weekend Watch: ‘Angel Has Fallen’ and ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ Among Holiday Worthy Viewing

Morgan Freeman as President Trumbull in “Angel Has Fallen.”

Angel Has Fallen” and “Jacob’s Ladder,” in theaters now, are viewer worthy films to catch this holiday weekend. “Angel Has Fallen” defied critics lambasting and became #1 at the box office. Morgan Freeman (President Trumbull) as POTUS in “Angel Has Fallen” won moviegoers votes. This is not the first time Freeman has played a president. He was President Beck in 1998’s “Deep Impact.”

In the non-stop thrill ride “Angel Has Fallen,” Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is once again a POTUS’ favorite angel. Even as a fugitive on the lam, Banning tries to save the president from real assassins. “Angel Has Fallen” follows the franchise’s 2013 “Olympus Has Fallen.” Unlike most sequels, “Angel Has Fallen” is double the fun and excitement. Last year Butler told me he felt “lazy” as Captain Joe Glass in “Hunter Killer”: https://eurweb.com/2018/10/26/gerard-butler-weighs-in-on-hunter-killer-and-more/

Butler is definitely back in his element and taking no prisoners in “Angel Has Fallen.” Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, “Fallen” also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo, and Nick Nolte.

Jacob’s Ladder

In the gripping and riveting  remake of “Jacob’s Ladder,” Dr. Jacob Singer (Michael Ealy) is a trauma surgeon at the Atlanta VA hospital in need of medical help himself. A war veteran, he has Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The visions and flashbacks are of great concern, not only to himself but his family.

Jacob and his wife have a newborn. His career is going well and things seem to be falling into place. Then he meets a  stranger who tells him his brother is alive and living  underground with other homeless veterans. After that unnerving encounter  Jacob’s life starts to spin out of control.

Fine performances, unsanctioned experimental drugs on veterans revealed, and scifi elements aren’t the only draws for this movie. The social and political commentaries speak volumes to the current state of affairs in this country. Directed by David M. Rosenthal, “Jacob’s Ladder” also stars Nicole Beharie, Jesse Williams, Joseph Sikora, and Karla Souza. “Jacob’s Ladder” is also On Demand
