Republican Kimberly Klacik Joins Race for Elijah Cummings’ House Seat [VIDEO]

*Republican strategist Kimberly Klacik is running for late Rep. Elijah Cummings’ seat in Maryland, and she wants Trump critics to know that residents were “very happy” when president brought attention to the issues plaguing their city.

“People got on Trump’s case for basically repeating what so many people in West Baltimore said. Not just the residents, but even the former mayor, Mayor [Catherine] Pugh said the same thing: rat-infested. There’s problems there,” Klacik told, “Fox & Friends First” on Tuesday.

Cummings was a vocal critic of Trump, and he feuded with the president after Trump tweeted in July that Baltimore is “rat and rodent-infested mess.” Trump was responding to Klacik bringing attention to the city’s problems.

“I drew a lot of attention to it and I should be the one to come up with solutions and I have many of them,” Klacik said. “We need answers to ‘The Squad.’ We need somebody to actually support Trump’s policies on immigration and many other things so I believe Republicans can win this seat and I’m ready to fight.”

At least two Democrats are eyeing Cummings’ old seat: former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and Cummings’ widow, Maya Rockeymoore-Cummings.

Mfume, a close friend of Cummings, held the Maryland congressional seat from 1987 to 1996 before stepping down to lead the civil rights organization.

“It is out of that unpredictable reality that I stand here before you today,” he said of Cummings’ death. “I honestly believe that I have to find a way to make sure that all he and others fought for is not lost, tossed to the side or forgotten.”

Cummings, a longtime top Democrat on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, passed away in October at the age of 68.
