*There’s probably few of you out there that might have missed seeing this talented youngster, Devin Haney, defend his newly crowned WBC title last Saturday night (11-09-19).
And if in fact, you were one of those who couldn’t watch him go against a game Alfredo Santiago in a match that was telecast live on the DAZN network from the Staples Center, folks, you really missed something.
This one started off not quite as planned for this young gladiator who was having some challenges dealing with the awkward, crafty, and taller Santiago who was trying his best to make it as difficult as possible for Haney to get in close. But in the fourth round, Haney found his mark and hit Santiago with a flurry of shots that included a powerful uppercut that dropped him. From that point on it was easy pickings for Haney and it seemed as if Santiago got his whole spirit taken out of him for the rest of the fight. And at the end of twelve championship rounds, all three judges scored the bout the same 120-107 for Haney.
This young man at only 20 years of age is destined to get better with time as he is looking towards the future with a possible showdown with Ryan Garcia who really wants to get in the ring with him. And folks, this is a fight that could be made although they have two different promoters (Garcia with Goldenboy and Haney with Matchroom boxing) they are both fighting on the same network, DAZN.
And from what promoter Eddie Hearns said, he believes the fight could be a huge money fight and he believes next December (2020)Â would be the ideal time for it to go down.
As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
In other boxing news, Tony Harrison and Jermell Charlo are set to go at it again in a rematch on December 21 at the Toyota Arena out in Ontario, Calif. in a bout that will be telecast live on FOX.
