*Kanye West’s Sunday Service in Salt Lake City on Oct. 5 saw the hip-hop star pause his hundred-member gospel choir to defend his support of Donald Trump.
As the Deseret News reports, Saturday’s edition of Ye’s popular spiritual gatherings coincided with the 189th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It also went down amid buzz over his forthcoming album, “Jesus is King.”
West, 42, previously admitted he didn’t vote in 2016, and told the audience that he feels stigmatized as a Black man and a Republican.

West, who hasn’t tweeted since New Year’s, also railed against social media: “Do not read comments on the Internet. These people don’t know you like that. Social media is designed to make you think slower. … They want to slow you down and control you” pic.twitter.com/1BGpA5prGt

“Abraham Lincoln was the Whig Party — that’s the Republican Party that freed the slaves,” Kanye said before explaining he refused to ride on the anti-Trump train based on the color of his skin. “I ain’t never make a decision based only on my color. That’s a form of slavery — mental slavery.”
At one point he warned fans about social media, telling them to “not read comments on the internet.”
“These people don’t know you like that,” he said. “Social media is designed to make you think slower … They want to slow you down and control you.”

It’s been just over a year since West made headlines after ranting about his support of Trump during his appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Two weeks later after SNL, he visited Trump at the White House, where he noted that wearing a red MAGA cap was like rocking a “Superman cape.” In early 2018, he visited TMZ Live and told viewers slavery was a “choice”.
After hailing Lincoln for freeing slaves during his Utah event over the weekend, West fired back at critics who believe Trump’s views are not aligned with those of the average Black American.
