Don’t Be Nice Slam Poetry Doc Qualifies For Oscars

*(New York, NY) –– DON’T BE NICE, the powerful new documentary film that follows five young, African American, Afro-Hispanic and queer slam poets competing for the National Championship, has qualified for the 92nd Academy Awards Best Documentary category after successful, limited theatrical runs in New York and Los Angeles. Directed by Max Powers, DON’T BE NICE can be seen nationwide this Friday, October 11 on Fuse.

Challenged by their coaches, the Bowery Slam Poetry team from New York City must break through personal boundaries and explore issues such as family, race, relationships, sex, and bullying to create their most vulnerable and honest work yet.

DON’T BE NICE cast includes: Lauren Whitehead, Ashley August, Sean DesVignes, Timothy DuWhite, Joel Francois, Noel Quinones, Jon Sands, Caroline Sinclair, and Oiutayo Bosede.

DON’T BE NICE is from Radio Drama Network and being released by Juno Films. The film is a Nikhil Melnechuk Production from producers Nikhil Melnechuk, Cora Atkinson, Melina Brown, Caitlin Mae Burke, Katy Chevigny, Judd Ehrlich, Melissa Jackson and David Lieberman, with music by Khari Mateen. Peter Buntaine is the Cinematographer with Editing by David Lieberman and Nathan Punwar.

DON’T BE NICE first premiered at Toronto’s documentary festival, Hot Docs, and made it’s US debut at AFI Docs and went on to play 27 festivals. The film has since picked 7 awards including “Best Documentary” at Macon Film Festival, Atlanta DocuFest, Vail Film Festival, and Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, “Best Director” at River Bend Film Festival and the “Jim Ewing Young Director Award” at Port Townsend Film Festival. DON’T BE NICE will also premiere at the forthcoming Heartland International Film Festival and the Brisbane International Film Festival in October.
