Workers Lose Holiday Bonuses, End-of-year Pay in Christmas Eve Store Fire – WATCH

*Dang, we can only imagine what a bummer it must be for employees of a Detroit grocery store that caught on fire Christmas Eve day.

Not only did they lose their place of work, but they also lost end of year pay. That’s because checks and holiday bonuses for 25 employees at the Metro Food Center went up in flames with the store as well, reports Fox 2.

“I went broke for my kids on Christmas. That’s what we do, we cash out for our kids to make sure they’re happy and we get ours last,” said Angelo Walker. “Literally, like this was my last check I was hoping to see bounce back and I can’t even do that.”

Wow, what a  bummer it must be for Walker who’s worked at the store for 17 years. Not to mention, he was also depending on the funds to help him get through Christmas.

Here’s more via Fox 2:

The fire started around 12:50 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on West Warren Avenue near Livernois. While the incident is still under investigation, Walker and other employees think the fire was ignited by wiring.

“We look in the pharmacy and that’s where the fire started and we asked ‘what caused the fire?'” Walker asked. “They said basically it was some wiring that caused the fire. So it was like crazy because we were trying to put the fire out and we couldn’t put it out and that’s when we said get all the customers out of here.”

Video from a chopper above showed smoke billowing out of the store from every section. While visibility was low, footage showed the roof in the store had largely collapsed. While there were no casualties reported, workers described scenes from inside the fire as “chaos.”

“You know, I’m ringing up customers and we saw them running saying that there was a fire, saying they were getting a fire extinguisher, and then the next thing you know smoke was just everywhere,” said Talia Hosey, a cashier at the grocery store.

The Fox 2 report also stated that the owner of Metro Food Center said they’ve been at that location for almost 40 years and plans to speak to the building’s owner on what to do about moving forward from the incident.
