THE REAL Welcomes Donald Faison, Robin Givens and Guest Co-Host Robin Thede – WATCH

*On Tuesday, Nov. 12, The Real welcomes back guest co-host comedian, producer and writer Robin Thede of A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Co-host Adrienne Houghton talks about her third wedding anniversary and losing weight to fit back into her wedding dress for a photoshoot. After asking what her co-hosts have done with their wedding dresses, she floats the idea of a having a “Bride Ball!”

The ladies then discuss the situation of a black man who was detained by transit police at a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station in CA for eating a sandwich on his way to work. The video of the incident has gone viral, and the hosts weigh in on whether they feel the law was properly enforced in this case, and how de-escalation training can be so important.

Then actress Robin Givens drops by to chat about her show Ambitions, and to share about speaking on college campuses.

And actor Donald Faison visits to talk about his new show Emergence and reveals that he thinks a Clueless remake about Dionne would be a great idea!

The Hosts Discuss The Police Detaining a Black Man For Eating On The BART Platform

Adrienne Houghton: I fully recommend watching this thing in its entirety…

Jeanne Mai: Entirety.

Adrienne: You will be so upset. At no point did this man, in my opinion, resist arrest. He was simply defending himself, and I think anybody –

[The Real audience applauds]

Adrienne: — would be irate if you were being… I get a warning, like “Hey, in case you didn’t know…”

Tamera Mowry-Housley: Yeah.

Adrienne: The woman that was actually taping him was like, “Yo, there’s no sign that says you can’t eat here, like show me the sign!”

Loni Love: Robin, what do you think?

Adrienne: Or at least give me the warning!

Robin: I think it’s crazy! And at one point, like four cops swarm this dude and take him away which is insane. I think they were just mad because they knew they couldn’t eat on the platform and they saw him enjoying this luxurious sandwich…

Adrienne: Yes!

Tamera: That is ridiculous.

Robin: It’s like, leave this man alone.

Loni: People eat everyday.

Jeannie: Of course!

Robin: (Laughing)

Jeannie: Shocker.

Adrienne: Groundbreaking!

Loni: No, I mean they do, but it is against the law. I have to say that. It is against the law. It’s just like jaywalking. Or things like that. But these laws – these laws were made to, I feel, to target vulnerable people or people of color. And that’s the problem with this type of law.

[The Real audience applauds]

Loni: Because you have a person –

Adrienne: You thought there was racial profiling in this?

Tamera: Yeah.

Loni: What we need – first of all, we need de-escalation training. And we also need racial bias training because you may not think that you’re racially biased, but you are.

[The Real audience applauds]

Loni: He even said it in the – the Foster guy said, he said, “I’m down here, and you’re way down there.”

Adrienne: “You came to look for me.”

Loni: The BART system, they put so many millions of dollars to hire 19 new police. And the reason why they hired the 19 new police officers was not for the eating, but because there’s violence and drugs that’s happening on the BART system, so that’s what they need to be covering.

[EDIT]

Loni: When people are in authority… sometimes they abuse that authority.

Adrienne: They go on power trips.

Loni: And it’s really hard when you’re the person being attacked to calm down. Because the young man was really getting upset, he was using homophobic slurs, he was getting upset. And then that makes – Allegedly. That’s what makes the police officer, I believe, get more upset. Then, it, it… so de-escalation is so imperative.
