*I’m sure there are a few of you who might think that at age forty the “Pac Man” (Manny Pacquiao) may be at the end of his road coming up against this younger undefeated world champion, Kieth Thurman.
But folks, after taking a look at him the other day at his media workout it looked to this writer that he might just give Thurman his hands full.
And that’s not to say that Thurman is someone that he can just walk right through on either. Both these guys are the perfect storm for each other possessing both power, skill, experience, and are well-seasoned veterans in the ring so anything is capable of happening.
But before I continue this I have to start off by talking about how the “Pac Man” has endured his long and illustrious career with all the ups and downs that came with it. Since first walking into Freddie Roach’s gym in Hollywood over some two decades ago when he was a nobody, to becoming the champion of twelve major boxing titles from the light flyweight all the way up to jr. middleweight champion. He’s had a total of 70 fights that he’s gone through garnering 61 wins and 7 losses and two draws, with 39 coming by way of knockout. He’s gotten more awards and accolades than Carter has liver pills from Boxing Writers Association “Fighter Of The Year” 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011. The ESPY’s Award, Ring Magazine title, (I could go on and on) and Ring Magazine Pound Per Pound Champ.
I mean folks, this guy is a huge attraction and a draw on pay per view and can fill up any arena. But with all that said, the fact of the matter is that he is at age forty and there are some who have questions as to whether he can still have a go with it in the ring at that age because this writer (who’s been hanging around this sport since 1982) has seen so many of a fighter continue to try and do it and mind you there have been some that have passed the litmus test and some that didn’t. This gentleman doesn’t need the money (I don’t think) and also has a professional career outside the ring in politics so why take the risk you might ask? Well, it all boils down to the real love that he has for the sport because he certainly doesn’t have to prove anything in my humble opinion.
Keith Thurman on the other hand, a much younger man and undefeated world champion wants to show the world that he can’t be beaten no matter who’s in front of him and is determined to show the world that he deserves to be considered the real welterweight king and on Saturday, July 20 he’ll have that opportunity. As I always say, we’ll see what happens as this one takes place live on Fox pay per view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
And for those of you who might not have the chance to see that one be sure to watch Caleb Plant defend his super middleweight title against undefeated Mike Lee on the same day telecast live on Fox Sports.
