Former MLBer David ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz Shot in the Back During Robbery in Dom. Republic – VIDEO

*David Ortiz, the former Boston Red Sox player also known as “Big Papi” was shot during a robbery Sunday in the Dominican Republic, according to his father.

Ortiz, 43, was reportedly hanging out at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo when a gunman burst into the place and opened fire and Ortiz was hit.

“They called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred,” Ortiz’s father, Leo Ortiz, told ESPN.

We do know that Ortiz was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and the suspect has been arrested. However, prior to being taken into custody, he found himself the victim of a bunch of angry David Ortiz fans who had their way with him before polivce arrived and it’s all on video. Watch it below.

Ortiz was shot in the lower back, and the bullet exited through his stomach, according to ESPN. As of this posting, he is currently in surgery, and reportedly told the emergency room doctor: “Please don’t let me die, I’m a good man.”

David Ortiz, who was born in Santo Domingo, played in the MLB for 20 seasons, most notably for the Boston Red Sox. The 10-time All-Star led Boston to three World Series titles in 2004, 2007 and in 2013 before he retired after the 2016 season.
