One More Week of LA Get Down

Destiny Romanelli is an aspiring actress and high school student in Los Angeles. She also won 2nd place at a recent SGRho & OASC oratorical contest for her speech on Black Migrations.

*The LA Get Down Festival continues for one more weekend in April at the Greenway Court Theatre (544 N. Fairfax Avenue) in Los Angeles.

The event is a Celebration of Hip Hop & Poetry and is presented in observance of National Poetry Month by the Greenway Arts Alliance and Da Poetry Lounge.

Kick off events included a Hip Hop vs. Poetry spoken word performance, writing workshops, New Voices: A Live Mix tape and more.

The weekend festival is jam packed with every fashion of elocutionists and lyrical masters.  It has left one young aspiring actress filled with inspiration to someday find her voice and take the mic.

“The first Saturday night was the competition of Team Poetry Vs Team Hip Hop.  I was rooting for the Team Hip Hop but Team Poetry took the win. Host Queen Sheba was engaging and funny and left the crowd wanting more;” stated high school student Destiny Romanelli.

“The best way to describe the LA Get Down Festival is to experience the unexpected.  The venue is an intimate setting, with a live band and  DJ Knodat.  The lighting is perfect and the music is on point.  All I could do is get up and move my feet to the Hip Hop beat with Poetry.”

The 3rdANNUAL LA GET DOWN FESTIVAL is presented with the support of the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program. For more information, please visit www.weho.org/arts or follow via social media  @WeHoArts. Additional support is provided by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs,  and by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

Destiny continues: “I had so much fun, I could feel the spoken words deep “Down” in my soul.  I get it now.   The artist gave it, I took it all in, to the point that I felt born again.  I wanted to take the mic, spit something tight, that wouldn’t have been right nor polite.”

The 3rdANNUAL LA GET DOWN FESTIVAL continues through April 27, 2019.  All workshops and performances will be held at Greenway Court Theatre.  The full festival schedule, and tickets and passes are available online at GreenwayCourtTheatre.org/LAGetDown2019.  Da Poetry Lounge Co-Founder is Shihan Van Clief, who also serves as Festival Artistic Director.
