*Marvel Comics and espnW are giving Serena Williams, Simone Biles and Misty Copeland a superhero makeover with reimagining them as comic book characters.
The transformation is part of an effort to honor the top 25 sport influencers who have made the biggest impact for women in the last year, Essence reports, citing an announcement made by ESPN.
Despite not achieving a calendar grand slam year, Williams’ season on the tennis court was a stellar one, with ESPN noting that, “”she is the only player to rank in the WTA top 10 in wins on clay, grass, and hard courts.”
For Biles, the comic book reimagining comes amid her emerging as an “[Someone who] became the first gymnast since 1992 to win a third straight national tittle.” This year proved to be a historic one for the athlete, who won her third consecutive world all-around title.

History also marks Copeland’s career this year, in light of her being named principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre. The honor marks Copeland as the first African American ballerina in the Theatre’s history to achieve such an accomplishment.
Others celebrated with comic reimaginings include former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who ordered an investigation into the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) on charges of corruption, money laundering, and fraud; swimmer Simone Manuel for being one of the few black female water athletes on a national platform, in addition to recently setting the American record for the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Women’s swimming and diving championship; and WNBA veteran Tamika Catchings for her 14-year career in the league and becoming the first WNBA player to score 1,000 career playoff points.
