*Filmmaker Ezra Edelman, who won an Oscar and Emmy for his acclaimed documentary “O.J.: Made in America,” will hit the baseball diamond for his next film, a biopic about famed baseball player Roberto Clemente.

The Puerto Rican baseball star played for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972. In December 1972, he boarded a heavily loaded plane en route from Puerto Rico to Nicaragua to assist with earthquake relief. The small aircraft crashed just off the Puerto Rican coast, and Clemente’s body was never recovered. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Edelman will develop the biopic for Legendary with writer Rowan Ricardo Phillips.

Legendary previously acquired the rights to David Maraniss’ 2006 book, Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball’s Last Hero, as well as striking an agreement with the late Clemente’s family for his life rights.

John Lesher will produce the biopic alongside Fuego Films’ Ben Silverman and Jay Weisleder, with Giselle Fernandez and Sandra Condito set to executive produce.
