The 21st annual Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Sries will be held Oct 18-21, at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Brooklyn, New York. The Film Festival, founded by African Voices magazine and Long Island University’s Media Arts Dept., Brooklyn Campus in 1997, is dedicated to providing opportunities for women of color filmmakers to advance their careers in the film industry.

“We’re proud to present a fine selection of life-affirming films that capture the beauty of our everyday lives and the art of practicing self-care,” said Reel Sisters Founder Carolyn A. Butts. “Sharing our stories with the world is an act of self-love and healing.”

Reel Sisters is the first Brooklyn-based film festival to showcase films directed, produced and written by women of color. The theme for this year’s festival is #time4self, which will showcase films dedicated to self-care, wellness and healing. Gender non-conforming filmmakers were also welcomed to submit women centered films to the festival.

Suitable

On the slate are “Suitable,” “The Perfect Sacrifice,” “She Rhymes Like A Girl,” “A Dream Is What You Wake Up From,” “Good Girls Don’t,” “Gumbo,” “Bodega,” “The Next Right Thing,” “Blaque,” “Token,” and “Our Stories. Our Medicine: In Conversation with Ericka Huggins.”

The Conversation moderated by television screenwriter/producer Valerie Woods and recorded in Oakland, California exclusively for Reel Sisters, with activist, poet, and educator Huggins, “explores the transformative and healing power of speaking the truth of our stories.”

As the longest-serving woman in the Black Panther Party leadership, the former political prisoner, widow at 20, and a mother separated from her newborn daughter as she awaited trial for two years, Huggins turned to meditation to keep her sanity. She says her spiritual practices have sustained her as a mother, grandmother, and social justice activist.
