“All I want is for people to accomplish something (for self) instead of criticizing the people who didn’t get to do that for you yet.” – Gil Scott-Heron

The written word lives on long after the body expires and wields great influence. Their meaning, as penned by the author, often changed from the original intent in the promotion of a current belief or ideology.  On May 27, 2011, Culture lost one of its greatest wordsmiths, and we lost one of the important voices of inspired thought leadership. This week as we think about independence and the freedoms it brings our Friday Drop profile posthumously- on ICON MANN’s IN CONVERSATION WITH…, is GIL SCOTT-HERON, poet, musician, author, activist. In present-day Scott-Heron’s work inspires artists like Kanye West, Common, KRS-ONE, Mos Def, and Aesop Rock.

Over the course of four decades, Scott-Heron gave expression to collective experiences of the societal injustices against Black and Brown people in the USA. Freedom is seldom free, this we know, so as we reflect on this Independence weekend let’s remember two of his works, THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED and JOSE CAMPOS TORRES, are as timely today as when they were originally penned.
