*While performing at the 2018 Essence Festival in New Orleans, Brandy had fans shaking their heads as she inexplicably excavated and dusted off her beef with Monica over their 1998 hit “The Boy Is Mine.”
During the song, the singer/actress switched the lyrics from, “The boy is mine” to “The song is mine,” a shot referring to the confusion over the song’s original release.
Watch below:
“The Boy Is Mine” dropped as a joint single in May 1998, and then ended up on Brandy’s sophomore album “Never Say Never” a month later. In July 1998, Monica also released the track as the lead single from her sophomore album, an effort that was also titled, “The Boy Is Mine.”
The track was the first #1 Hot 100 hit for both artists and spent 13 weeks on top. Additionally, the song brought both singers Grammy Awards in 1999 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.
At the time, rumors had the pair in an unspoken rivalry, which escalated when Monica took issue with Brandy performing the song on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” without her. In turn, Brandy was reportedly upset that Monica used the song’s title for the name of her album.
Soon, reports surfaced of a near physical altercation between the two during rehearsal for the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1998. That’s when their respective managers attempted to squash the rumors by releasing a joint statement that blamed the “disturbing” media and calling the “ongoing negativity totally unfair.”
Needless to say, fans were not feeling Brandy’s residual salt over the song.
