Issa Rae: ‘I Don’t Consider Myself Famous By Any Means’

*Despite her television success, style influence, and social media reach, Issa Rae doesn’t think of herself as famous.

“My life hasn’t changed that much,” she quipped to The Hollywood Reporter. “If anything, I say it feels like I’m popular in high school where it’s like, ‘Oh, I know you.’”

Rae, who grew up in California, has the type of schedule that keeps her in the spotlight. She recently hosted the CFDA Fashion Awards, works as a spokesmodel for Covergirl and is currently shooting Season 3 of her hit HBO series “Insecure.”

“But I don’t consider myself famous by any means,” she said. “I’m not Rihanna or Beyoncé, you know? I can walk into a grocery store just fine.”

Page Six noted that her response is a bit different from what shared about her level of fame with the Associated Press in May 2017.

“The true test for me was Inglewood. I live in Inglewood, and I walk in Inglewood all the time,” she described. “I do a morning walk, and nobody recognized me. Then just a couple weeks ago I did my routine walk and I had three cars turn around and stop … One almost tried to follow me home. So I was like, ‘Oh, I can’t do this anymore in my own neighborhood.’”

The Golden Globe nominee also revealed that she will center the next season of her HBO comedy on “black masculinity as it relates to black women.”
