*Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson and Project Islamic Hope President Najee Ali and a coalition of civil rights leaders will hold a press conference on Monday, April 9 in front of the LAPD’s Southwest Police Station 1546 W. MLK Blvd, L.A. 90062.

They will call on the L.A. Police Commission to institute a policy that LAPD officers may only use deadly force when absolutely necessary to prevent imminent and serious bodily injury or death, and only after all non-lethal de-escalation tactics have been used to subdue a suspect. California legislators have introduced a similar police reform package in the state legislature.

“The L.A. Police Commission does not have to wait for the state legislature to pass police reform legislation on the use of deadly force,” says Hutchinson and Ali,” It can take the initiative and implement a policy mandating mandatory de-escalation tactics to be used in conflict situations and that deadly force can only be used when there is a proven and direct threat to an officer.

The civil rights leaders will follow-up the press conference call for police commission reform change by pressing the police commission at its next scheduled meeting.
