Ringside Update/Ortiz vs Berto II The Second Chapter

imagesVFSZFYE0*The last time Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz got it on it was really a blast with both fighters hitting the canvas throughout what was considered a fight of the year candidate. Although Berto lost the last time around by a majority decision after twelve grueling rounds, they were both knocked down by each other in what turned out to be a real barnburner.

This was another chapter in the continuing saga of two great fighters who hadn’t fought in several years and this one turned out quite different folks.

You could see that Berto from the opening bell had nothing but revenge on his mind as he came out of his corner. He seemed to be more focused and determined to not make any mistakes this time.
With the exception of a flash knockdown in round one that actually could have been more of Berto not having his balance, there really wasn’t a lot of action.

But it all came down in round two when Berto dropped Ortiz with a left uppercut that had him struggling to get back on his feet. And although Ortiz tried to get back into the fight, Berto unleashed a wicked combination that dropped him for good with 1 minute and 14 seconds left in the round. images286OBMA4imagesIP28R5DG

This all happened in front of a near capacity crowd of 7,000 plus and telecast live on the Fox network. There are certainly those who might say that Berto is a washed up fighter, but I dispute that. And I really believe that he would give Danny Garcia some fits, and I hear that is a bout that is highly possible. A fight with the winner of Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter would also be a good one. And don’t forget, there’s a guy named Kell Brooke who hails out of the U.K. who also holds the IBF welterweight belt that could give them all their hands full.

There was another big fight that took place back east that was telecast live on Showtime Championship Boxing Saturday night in Washington D.C. at the D.C. Armory between WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack and former champ Lucian Bute.
This one went the distance of twelve rounds but was given a controversial majority draw as everyone who saw this go down believed that Jack won hands down.
And now they’re setting up Jack to go against James Degale who holds the IBF belt in a unification fight that’s set to take place in September in the U.K. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.

Coming up this weekend is Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Amir “King” Khan out in Las Vegas at the new T-Mobile Arena. This one is considered to be huge pay per view event and one that everyone is waiting to see go down and it’s for the title belt that Alvarez took from Miguel Cotto last year. This is also the first boxing event to be held in this new joint. It’ll all be on Showtime pay per view so get your popcorn and drinks ready.
