The Socialist’s Journal: Quick Hits 2016 Pt.2

Brookins Head Shot

*It has been hinted at for a while but last week actual Republicans with high prestige came out and proclaimed that Donald Trump becoming President would be a disaster. George Will, a longtime Republican commentator, has said that Republicans should grit their teeth for 4 years and start concentrating on the next presidential election cycle in 2020. This is significant for two reasons. First, Will is assuming that Trump will lose which I’d say is a conclusion based on Trump’s campaign platform. Second, Will’s stance implies that Trump is not worth mobilizing behind which I’d again say is a conclusion based on Trump’s campaign platform.

I was wrong about how people would react to Lebron James after the NBA Finals. I was wrong about how the Finals would play out. But most of all I was wrong about Kyrie Irving.

One thing I think most people can agree on is that it wasn’t necessary that a third-grader was stamped with an “I need lunch money” message. I understand that the school and the school district want and deserve payment for lunches made and served. Nevertheless there should not be any occasion that calls for an 8-year-old to have his business broadcast for all classmates to know. Hopefully his school mates treated him with more understanding upon seeing the stamp than the adults at the school treated him when giving the stamp.

The decision of Great Britain to exit the European Union is basically Brits betting on themselves. They have come to the conclusion that they can be more prosperous without the support of other countries. Of course underneath this surface there is the xenophobia of not wanting to be tied together with countries who are having trouble securing their borders in the face of increased Middle Eastern refugees. If Great Britain wants to ensure that those people don’t get into its country, so be it. But then it must also own up to the fact that they are being extremely hypocritical given their history of imperialism.

On the heels of a tragic mass shooting incident in Orlando and coincidentally happening in concert with the Stonewall Inn being recognized as the first national monument to the gay rights movement, the New York City Police Department revealed that it had designed some of its patrol cars with rainbows. This was done intentionally to show support for the gay pride parade in New York City. I believe it is noteworthy that even though there was a major act of violence that targeted LGBT individuals recently, queer people are so ingrained into society that these positive developments are not seen as related to the Orlando shooting. Instead they are seen as stand alone occurrences; and not very prestigious occurrences at that.

I have a general policy not to feel sorry for people because it is patronizing. But I almost feel bad Johnny Manziel. He was so talented and athletic that he never had to study his craft of playing quarterback at any level. As a result he made it to the NFL where everyone was supernaturally talented and so he was not able to dominate by simply showing up. I was not and am not a fan of his. Nevertheless I wish he could get his act together because I hate to see extremely talented people waste their gifts.
