*Sometimes are there some things you absolutely do not feel like doing? Think about it, what or who got on your absolute last nerve recently? Maybe you were extremely tired and really wanted to stay home in your warm bed, tucked up under the covers. Just thinking about it makes you feel warm and cozy inside, doesn’t it? Feelings have a way of changing the pace of our lives. But when we have to do what we have to do, we get over our feelings and get the job done, right? I’ve got some good and bad news for you.
The good news is that fear is only a feeling. The bad news is that too often, we allow it to paralyze us and keep us in a holding pattern because we are more afraid of what will happen instead of being excited about the possibility of what will happen.
As defined, fear is “an emotion of worry, doom or a perceived threat causing a change in brain and organ function and ultimately a change in behavior, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events.” Fear may occur in response to a specific stimulus happening in the present, or to a future situation, which is perceived as risk to health or life, status, power, security, or in the case of humans, wealth or anything held valuable. The fear response arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat (also known as the “fight-or-flight response”), which in extreme cases of fear (horror and terror) can be a freeze response or paralysis.
I love the quote by the late and great Zig Ziglar:
“F-E-A-R has two meanings: ‘Forget Everything And Run’ or ‘Face Everything And Rise.’ The choice is yours.”
Do you realize that most successful people don’t lack fear? They just manage to find a way to act and persevere in spite of it – Be afraid and do it anyway. It is not possible to be successful based on fears alone. In fact, it’s often the capitalizing on your fears that leads to success. Don’t you think Oprah was scared to start her own TV network? What if she failed before the world? Guess what, initially she did. Before there was the OWN network, there was another attempt to start a woman-based network. It failed. Before OWN became successful, it tanked, but she refueled and rebuilt her business.
I’ll take you a step down. The reason we love Oprah so much is that she shared her vulnerabilities with the world, not one or two people, but millions! She talked about her weight, her family issues, her molestation, her bad relationship choices and more. Don’t you think she was scared and fearful about being judged? She told her truth anyway and she has been winning ever since.
So how do you overcome fear so that you can come into your own? First, recognize that the fear that you feel is just that. It’s a feeling and emotion that is not necessarily based in truth. Secondly, you must face your fear, call it what it is and decide that you’re bigger and better than it. Third, anticipate success more than failure. Even if things don’t turn out exactly the way you want it to, if you learn something from the experience, you’ve gained.
