*Urban murals can change the way a neighborhood looks and feels. It’s not something that is just pretty to look at but it can also become a statement, something meaningful to a community.

There is a certain process that is required to create a mural, certain steps that need to be taken in order to ensure the art is adequate and fitting for the place where it’s being created.

A wall is usually selected by an organization, although an artist can have a say whether the site is mural-appropriate. Sometimes an artist gives birth to an idea and sees a wall where the idea could grow, then gets permission to paint it.

With these steps, beautiful murals around the world have been created, like the William Walker murals which present issues in society, giving voice to them through images placed where everyone can see. These works of art leave the audience breathless, in awe and in thought at what they represent.

Things to Take into Account

Some important things to consider before creating the mural are the condition of the wall, whose it is, is it indoor or outdoor, the size of the canvas, what message should be portrayed in the project, etc. The wall should be in good condition, that means not too badly cracked or broken. What the wall is made of is also important. If the wall has certain minerals that bleed through, it might ruin the mural.

If there are only minor problems with the wall, like a few holes, those can be handled by volunteers, the artist or even a professional team. There are a few other requirements the wall must comply with in order to be able to be used for the mural. It has to be clean; there can be no old painting on it. This can fixed with a thorough scrapping or power washing. The wall doesn’t have to be perfect as the minor imperfections can be fixed or painted over. The owner of the wall should be sought out to give permission to the organization or the artist. A project proposal also has to be discussed with the owner.

The designs for the project need to be discussed in meetings and researched in order to give the community the right voice.

Planning is Necessary

A mural is a well-planned out project, the artist has to know how big the wall is in order to be able to scale the picture to the accurate size. The details of the wall such as windows and doors have to kept in mind when designing the project. The necessary materials have to be planned out and acquired ahead of time to make sure the project is well underway and within budget. The artist, volunteers or employees, materials such as paint, brushes, lifts to access the higher parts of the mural should be planned and acquired ahead of time. All of these elements allow for a successful development of a mural.
