RECAP: Empire (S2, Ep9) Sinned Against

*Alicia Keys, Rosie O’Donnell and even Lee Daniels made cameo appearances on this season’s ninth episode of “Empire,” but the only one that truly mattered was the Grammy winner who turned Jamal up and out!

Skye Summers (Keys) has agreed to do a duet called “Powerful” with Jamal for his new album. Let’s digress just a second. Keys and Jussie Smollett (Jamal) look so much alike that they could actually be real-life siblings. So, when they actually start kissing it almost seems incestuous! Even though Keys was just screaming her lyrics at times, their video for “Powerful,” directed by Daniels playing himself, was just that.

If you thought that was a little cray-cray, there was much more cherry Kool-Aid in the tank last night.

Let’s start with Cookie, whose wardrobe choices aren’t what they once were and that’s not good. She’s roaming the streets of Philadelphia with her sister Candice looking for their drug-addicted sister Carol. After two days of searching, Cookie taps an old cellmate (O’Donnell) to help her track Carol down. The ex-con comes through and the sisters find Carol on the steps of a crack house. After a bit of bickering it’s decided that Carol’s kids will remain with Candice, while Carol will bunk with Cookie.

Candice, unhappy with Carol’s decision, warns her sister that once Cookie found out what Carol did while Cookie was in the pen, their little Sister Sledge reunion would end up like the original Supremes. Just guessing here, but one of those boys—probably Hakeem—might have come out of Carol’s womb.

Meanwhile Cookie’s boo Laz gets a visit from his boys who are getting a little impatient about their payday. Laz ends up pulling a gun on them, saying the deal is off. That’s not the only thing that goes awry for this pretty boy. Once Lucious spies Cookie and Laz making out in her office, he does his own checking and returns with a couple of his own boys. It appears that Laz was part of the gang punking young rappers. Sigh. So long Laz. It was real.

Lucious was in a giving mood last night. The proud grandpa to be bought Andre and Rhonda a mansion on Long Island. In return, Andre told his pops they could raise the money for the streaming company by selling off parts of the Empire catalog. There was one snag, however. Cookie co-owns the rights to some of Empire’s most popular songs. When Lucious tries to convince Cookie to sign over her rights, she had one question: “Are you stupid?”

Lastly, Anika, preggers with Hakeem’s baby, had a whole slew of Glenn Close “Fatal Attraction” moments Wednesday night. She even went so far as to crash Hakeem’s party and trash his new boo in front of him. “You’re Jenny-from-the-block knockoff lives in a hovel with seven brothers and sisters,” she tells Hakeem. He tells her she’ll never be a Lyon.

Best line of the night: “It’s nice to see you sleeping your way to the bottom.” – Lucious to Cookie when she starts making out with Laz in front of him
