*Wunmi Mosaku, star of “Sinners,” has earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film, but says it has been difficult to embrace the achievement given ongoing ICE crises in the United States.
Speaking to The Times U.K., Mosaku explained that celebrating feels nearly impossible while tragic events are unfolding, including the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of ICE agents. “One feels beautiful and one is so dark and heavy; truly dystopian — how can I possibly go out and buy some drinks and enjoy the moment?” the Nigeria-born Brit said.
She also noted differences in how she and her U.S.-born husband process tragedy. While he appeared less affected, Mosaku described feeling “floored for a week.”
“There’s a very strange American psyche where terrible things happen and people still can go to work the next day, whereas I’m floored for a week and think, ‘How are people going to crowded places when this has just happened?’ I want a cocoon. My reaction reminds him that this is not normal,” she said.
In addition to Mosaku’s Oscars nod, “Sinners” received 15 total nominations, including major categories such as Best Picture, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, and both Best Screenplay and Director for Ryan Coogler. We reported earlier that the vampire thriller surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.”
Close behind in total nominations is “One Battle After Another,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which earned 13 nods. The film has garnered awards and nominations across a wide assortment of categories—including direction, screenplay, performances, and cinematography—positioning Anderson as the presumed frontrunner in the Best Director race. That standing solidified at the Directors Guild of America Awards, where Anderson received Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, Screenrant reports. Historically, the guild’s top honor has closely aligned with the Academy’s Best Director winner.
Despite this year’s narrative surrounding “Sinners,” industry momentum favors Anderson. A split between Best Picture and Best Director remains possible, but the likelihood of Coogler overtaking him appears slim.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event will air live on ABC and Hulu, with Conan O’Brien returning as host.
