*Universal Music Group (UMG) has partnered with UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music to create the Berry Gordy Music Industry Scholarship, a tribute to the Motown founder’s transformative influence on music and culture.
According to uDiscoverMusic, this initiative, rooted in UMG’s Sounds of the Future campaign and UCLA’s dedication to fostering music industry talent, aims to empower students with exceptional potential. The scholarship will provide financial support for tuition, housing, and other educational costs to a deserving student each year, selected by the Director of The UCLA Berry Gordy Music Industry Center.
Recipients, named Berry Gordy Scholars, may receive continued funding in subsequent years based on financial need and academic commitment. The program builds on the 2024 launch of the Gordy Center, a hub for music industry research, education, and career development.
“For more than 65 years, Berry Gordy’s name has been synonymous with artistry and the transformative power of music,” said Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG Chairman and CEO. He emphasized that the scholarship invests in young creators who embody Gordy’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
Berry Gordy expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “I am thrilled that my friend Sir Lucian Grainge and Universal Music Group have committed to support this program with their endowment that will help open doors for many more students and continue to pave the way for music to be a force for good and change.”

Aligned with UMG’s Sounds of the Future campaign, now in its third year, the scholarship supports efforts to amplify Black creativity and preserve cultural heritage.
The 2025 program includes career immersion experiences, immersive art installations, and donations to nonprofits like Roots of Music in New Orleans and Girls Make Beats in Los Angeles, fostering equity and innovation in the music industry.
“The center provides vital opportunities for students at UCLA to help prepare for careers in the music industry, so that future generations of young talent will continue to innovate, inspire and bring together culture and communities through the power of music,” Gordy added.
