*Tyrese’s new film “1992” premiered earlier this week. Several celebrities were in attendance including Tyrese’s “Fast and Furious” family, Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. The red carpet design paid homage to the 1990s, which included low-rider cars and air-bushed paintings. One was a mural of Ray Liotta who passed before the film’s release.
The film is set in the early 90’s and takes place on the night of the verdict of the Rodney King case. After several, police officers who were caught on camera beating Rodney King were found not guilty. Residents of Los Angeles set the city on fire literally, especially in the Black neighborhoods.
Because there is so much chaos erupting Mercer, played by Tyrese, makes plans for him and his son to take refuge at his job until things calm down. As an ex-convict trying to be better for himself and his son, he finds it best to remove them from any possible altercations.
But sometimes the more we try to avoid something, the more we run right into it. On the other side of town Riggin, played by Scott Eastwood, and his father Lowell, played by the late Ray Liotta are planning the ultimate heist. As two white men who have no emotional attachment to the verdict, they see this as an opportunity to rob an otherwise highly secured warehouse. This warehouse happens to be Mercer’s place of employment. As Mercer tries to protect his son from the riots, he now needs to defend himself and his son from the robbery.
The film follows the complicated relationships between father and son. Showing the complex dualities and similarities of Black and White families during a time of cultural crisis.

As Tyrese introduced “1992” he shared his sentiments about making this film. “We experienced something very evil and traumatic in 1992. But amid the trauma we gotta do something entertaining,” said Tyrese.
Before the film started he took a moment to honor those close to him that have passed including his mother, John Singleton, Paul Walker, and the late great Ray Liotta. Being one of his last films Liotta gave an amazing and lasting performance as the menacing character we’ve grown to love.
“1992” is in theaters now.
