*Motown’s most iconic hits came from the collaboration of legendary performers and the talented songwriters who created the music. One of these unsung talents was Roger Penzabene, a young lyricist whose promising future was tragically cut short. His deeply personal songwriting produced one of The Temptations’ most iconic hits, “I Wish It Would Rain,” a song that would live on long after his passing.
According to Ultimate Guitar, Penzabene contributed to some of Motown’s most memorable moments. He wrote “The End of Our Road,” recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips and Marvin Gaye, and several hits for The Temptations: “You’re My Everything,” “I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You),” and “I Wish It Would Rain.”
The inspiration for “I Wish It Would Rain” came from a painful chapter in Penzabene’s personal life. In his early 20s, he discovered his wife was having an affair. Overcome with heartbreak, he poured his grief into the song’s emotional lyrics, which were later brought to life by The Temptations.
When “I Wish It Would Rain” was released as a single in January 1968, it quickly became a hit. The song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100, spent three weeks at that position, and climbed to number one on the Billboard R&B singles chart. The Temptations named their 1968 album after the song.
Sadly, Penzabene passed away days before the single’s official release. On December 31, 1967, just one day after his wedding anniversary, he died by suicide at age 23.
“I Wish It Would Rain” has remained a timeless classic, covered by artists like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, and Bruce Springsteen, who recorded his version in 2022.
