*Michael Strahan is reportedly planning to leave “Good Morning America” later this year when his $20 million contract expires.
Sources indicate that Strahan’s decision is motivated by a desire to focus more on his family, RadarOnline reports. In October 2023, he took a leave of absence to support his daughter, Isabella, during her recovery from brain tumor surgery. The experience has reportedly led Strahan to reevaluate his priorities.
An insider claimed, “He will be out by this summer — he’s had enough.” However, another source denies this, stating, “Several higher ups at ABC say this isn’t true. There’s no truth that I’m aware of that about this at this current juncture. That piece is strictly speculative rumor mill stuff.”
They further suggested that the reports seem to be coming from someone with an agenda to complicate things for GMA.
Amid layoffs at ABC News, sources claim Strahan’s salary has become unsustainable. Staffers at the network have expressed resentment towards the hefty paychecks of GMA hosts Strahan, Robin Roberts, and George Stephanopoulos, calling them “the most hated people in the building right now.”
Morale has reportedly dropped as the show falls behind NBC’s Today. One source added, “Producers are now doing the work of two people for one paycheck.”
Another point of contention is the network’s decision to pay $15 million toward Donald Trump’s presidential library to settle a defamation case. The lawsuit stemmed from an inaccurate on-air statement by Stephanopoulos, who had claimed that Trump was found civilly liable for raping writer E. Jean Carroll.
As one insider pointed out, “Money that could have gone to retain producers and assistant producers. People who have contracts coming up are being offered a measly two percent raise… while ABC pays out a Stephanopolous mistake and keeps the anchor salaries at astronomical numbers.”
