*Serena Williams confirmed on June 1 that she will return to competitive tennis at the Queen’s Club Championship in London later this month, four years after stepping away from the sport.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion made the announcement in a social media video. In the clip, Serena stands on a tennis court as notifications flood her phone. The on-screen text reads, “Guess everybody heard the news.” She captioned the post, “Good news travels fast,” before joking, “I’ve got to change my number.”
The news arrives four years after Serena stepped away in August 2022, to focus on her family. She and husband Alexis Ohanian share two daughters, Olympia, 8, and Adira, 2. At the time, Serena made clear she was not ready to fully close the door. “I have never liked the word retirement,” she told Vogue. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution.”

In a 2023 interview with E! News, she opened up about the internal conflict that followed her retirement. “I think I feel torn because I’m still able to play at a very, very, very high level,” she said. “With that being said, I always wanted to leave the game playing at a very high level. But it’s hard because it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I could still play, and I could still do all that stuff.'”
With the Queen’s Club Championship on the horizon, her return to the court appears to be the next chapter in what she once called her evolution.
