A pushback to rewriting American history
*There is much concern about some politicians wanting to rewrite American history. African American history – with all of its ugliness and perseverance born out of slavery – is a huge part of that history and should not be whitewashed.
As a pushback, world-renowned photographer Ian Foxx is presenting a production titled Red, White and Blues … Rise Up at the Barbara Morrison Performance Arts Center on Monday October 6th at 7pm. The Center is located at Leimert Park in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. Foxx says, “More than ever now, we need to educate and accentuate the significant contributions African Americans have made in the United States and beyond. Banning books, dismantling museum displays and artifacts; to deny our children the true history of our culture; is a shame.” He went on to say, “Our job is to preserve our culture.” Let that sink in.

A native Detroiter, Foxx migrated to New York, then to Seattle where he performed as an actor and assumed the role of Company Manager of the Black Arts West Theater. While there, he also founded the nonprofit Foxx Follies Productions – writing, directing, and producing the popular Red, White, and Blues: A Bicentennial Statement in Rhythm which toured the western United States. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1976; the year the United States celebrated its bicentennial – 200 years of independence. So, as we now are approaching the 250-year, this timely production is sure to draw a lot of attention in today’s climate.
In a recent article, Senior Correspondent Stacy M. Brown included a quote from Chad Williams, a professor at Boston University who said, “[Rewriting American history] sends a very dangerous message about how the government is seeking to control this country’s narrative with a very narrow and propagandistic version of American history.”
