*Queen Latifah is stepping into menopause with a sense of empowerment. At 55, she was surprised to learn from her gynecologist about the changes in her hormone levels. “I wouldn’t have even known that I was in premenopause, and I was actually kinda shocked,” she tells PEOPLE. Now, she’s embracing this phase and leading a new initiative to support others.
About two years ago, a routine doctor’s visit revealed Latifah’s entry into perimenopause. “It was her telling me what my numbers were saying. And once I saw that, I could sort of tune into a couple of symptoms I may have been having,” she says. Despite never experiencing hot flashes, she noticed subtle changes, such as increased temperature sensitivity or stubborn weight gain.
As the first spokesperson for WeightWatchers’ new “WeightWatchers for Menopause” campaign, Latifah aims to destigmatize this life stage. “It’s important to be able to get as much information as you can so that you can take care of yourself,” she says. The program offers women access to clinicians, resources, and a supportive community.

Latifah acknowledges the fear surrounding menopause, noting, “it is a scary thing for a lot of people and not very well talked about.”
Her doctor’s guidance made the transition less daunting, and she hopes the campaign will do the same for others. “Finally, there’s something you can do about it,” she adds, emphasizing the value of informed support.
For Latifah, wellness is central to thriving during menopause. “I think sleep is extremely overrated for some people, but I always try to get a good night’s sleep. Eight hours or better,” she notes. She also prioritizes exercise and healthy eating.
“I’ve been on my scooter a lot lately just because I need to feel the wind in my face,” the actress/hip-hop icon says. “That does something for my brain and my heart.”
