*Ten years after his passing, Prince is back on the charts — and this time, it’s a song most fans may not immediately recognize as his own.
Prince’s estate released “With This Tear” to honor the tenth anniversary of the musician’s death, and the track has made an immediate impact on two Billboard charts. The song opens at No. 6 on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart and arrives at No. 8 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart, a broader tally measuring paid downloads across digital retail outlets, Forbes reports.
What makes the debut particularly notable is the song’s backstory. “With This Tear” was written by Prince but originally recorded by Celine Dion, making its chart run under his name a full-circle moment for a composition that never received its due as a Prince track during his lifetime.
The new entry builds on an already substantial chart legacy. Prince now holds 31 total appearances on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart and 28 on the R&B Digital Song Sales roster, with top 10 counts of 9 and 14 respectively. On the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, “With This Tear” ties “1999” and “Purple Rain (Piano and a Microphone 1983)” as his sixth-highest-peaking entry, while matching “Raspberry Beret” at No. 8 on the Hip-Hop side.
The debut also marks Prince’s first new entry on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart since May 2016, when his unexpected death triggered a surge of his music across the rankings.
Meanwhile, the “Purple Rain” album quietly climbs from No. 3 to No. 2 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart, held from the top spot only by “KPop Demon Hunters.”
