*Penske Media — the parent company behind major outlets such as Vibe, Rolling Stone, Variety, and Billboard — has filed a federal lawsuit against Google, accusing the company of misusing its content through the AI Overviews tool.
As SandraRose.com reports, the lawsuit was filed in a Washington, D.C. federal court, highlighting how Google’s AI summaries draw from Penske’s websites, thereby reducing traffic to their original articles. Approximately 20% of Google searches linking to Penske’s sites now include these AI summaries, a number expected to grow, further threatening the company’s affiliate revenue.
Jay Penske, chairman, founder, and CEO of PMC, emphasized the company’s commitment to protecting its journalists and the integrity of digital media. “As a leading global publisher, we have a duty to protect PMC’s best-in-class journalists and award-winning journalism as a source of truth,” he stated to Axios. “Furthermore, we have a responsibility to proactively fight for the future of digital media and preserve its integrity – all of which is threatened by Google’s current actions.”

Google’s AI practices are impacting more than just Penske’s portfolio. Independent bloggers partnered with Penske’s SHE Media ad network have also reported sharp declines in website traffic. For instance, Sandrarose.com saw a 40% drop in traffic, while Tami Reed, owner of Talkingwithtami.com, said her monthly page views fell dramatically — from 400,000 to fewer than 5,000.
Xaviera Bryant, who runs Icecreamconvos.com, shared her struggles in a YouTube video titled “I Might Lose Everything.” She explained, “It really all began after Google did the ‘Helpful Content Update’ and deemed my website useless,” adding that Google “basically snatched me out of search engines or either pushed my content so far down in search engines that I no longer got traffic.”
The lawsuit highlights growing concerns among digital publishers about the survival of their businesses as Google’s AI summaries draw readers away from their sites.
