*In an industry dominated by legacy brands, footwear engineer and entrepreneur Omar Bailey is forging his own path.
As the former Head of the Yeezy Innovation Lab and now the Co-Founder and Creative Director of FCTRY LAb, Bailey is not just designing shoes—he’s disrupting the entire footwear business model. His independent, Black-owned innovation company has caught the attention of industry giants and cultural icons alike, and now, his journey is being highlighted in the new Keanu Reeves docu-series “Visionaries” on ROKU.
Bailey’s passion for footwear started at an early age. “I started drawing and sketching sneakers as a seven-year-old,” he recalls. Growing up in the ’90s, when Air Jordans were reshaping sneaker culture, he was captivated by their designs. However, in his neighborhood, these shoes weren’t just fashion statements; they were status symbols that could make someone a target. His parents refused to buy him the most sought-after sneakers, but rather than feeling left out, Bailey turned to sketching, filling notebooks with his own designs.
“I love to draw and sketch. I guess call me old-school or a dinosaur or whatever you want to call me. But I like getting my sketchbook and just getting a pen and just kind of sketching,” he says.
That childhood passion propelled him through art school and into a career with major brands such as New Balance, Adidas, Timberland, and K-Swiss. His journey took him across the globe, from working in shoe factories in India to understanding supply chains in China. “I’m not just a designer,” he emphasizes. “I’m someone who really understands the business of footwear from A to Z.”
The Birth of FCTRY LAb
After years of working with top-tier brands and serving as the head of innovation at Yeezy, Bailey set out to build something new. Partnering with Abhi Som, he co-founded FCTRY LAb, an independent footwear innovation company focused on cutting-edge technology and an equitable business model. The company broke records with its first major launch, the Yellow Duck Boot, in collaboration with rapper NLE Choppa.
“We came together and we created this shoe within our business model of empowering creators and cutting them in on the revenue in a way that big brands don’t necessarily work,” he says of his collaboration with the rapper.
Bailey’s approach is revolutionary in an industry where artists and athletes typically have little ownership over the shoes bearing their names. The success of the Duck Boot proved that his model wasn’t just innovative—it was effective.
“Our goal is to continue to do that with other partners, other brands, other creators and continue to help them build their brands through footwear in a big way.”

The Role of Technology in Footwear Innovation
Bailey is deeply invested in the technological advancements shaping the future of footwear. While AI is dominating conversations in many industries, he’s most excited about the continued evolution of 3D printing.
“We use a lot of 3D printing right now as a tool for the development process. So when you’re creating a shoe and you move into the actual physical creation of it, 3D printing can play a vital role in it because you’re able to turn those concepts around pretty quick,” he says.
The potential for 3D-printed metal molds could be a game-changer, drastically reducing the time it takes to manufacture new footwear designs.
“3D metal printers are going to allow us to speed that process up even more. So that you don’t have to lose so much time making the molds for the part,” Bailey explains.
“I’m excited to see as that technology continues to evolve and more people start to incorporate or more companies start to incorporate it in their method of producing product. Because what that’s ultimately going to do is allow the cost to go down so it can become more accessible for everybody else.”
Major Collaborations and the Road Ahead
FCTRY LAb isn’t slowing down. The company is preparing to launch a new collaboration with an international female music star, details of which will be announced soon. Additionally, they are continuing to expand their work with NFL athletes.
“Jalen’s a pro bowl, all-pro cornerback for the Miami Dolphins, been in the league for a long time. He’s a veteran, very well respected, always been top of his class, and an elite athlete,” Bailey explains. “We created a football cleat for him that was custom engineered, not custom designed, but custom engineered for him and him specifically by casting mold in his foot and building a foot mold around his foot, which allowed us to build him a cleat that’s way more comfortable and way more efficient than any cleat that he’s played in in the past.
“In addition to that, the NFL tested it and ours tested top five amongst 40 some-odd cleats that the league tests every year before the season starts, which is a huge result for us. So because of that success with Jalen and the cleat and the work that we’ve done with the league, it’s evolved into about almost a dozen or so NFL players that we’re working with this year.”
This success has led to further partnerships with other NFL stars, including Trent Williams, Trayvon Walker, and Jonathan Taylor.
Beyond collaborations, Bailey is set to launch his own branded footwear, paying homage to his previous label, Omar Bailey Footwear, which found success in the Middle East.
“The focus is on building and scaling this business,” he says. “We want to turn FCTRY LAb into an empire—something that one day hits $300 million or more in revenue.”

A Visionary Recognized
Bailey’s impact has not gone unnoticed. Being featured in “Visionaries” alongside Keanu Reeves was an honor.
“He’s just as nice as everyone asks or as he’s just as nice as everyone thinks that he is or says that he is, even if they haven’t met him,” Bailey notes. “It was great just being around him. He’s not he’s not a man of many words. His presence sort of does the talking for you. But when he does speak, it’s always very profound. I found that he was just very inquisitive about what I did. And it caught his attention.”
For Bailey, the recognition is about more than personal achievement; it’s about inspiring the next generation.
“My journey is one of passion, commitment, but determination, one of resilience. And I hope there’s at least one person out there who that story would inspire, motivate, and impact in a positive way.”
Bailey is currently featured in episode three of “Visionaries,” now streaming on ROKU. Watch our full conversation with him via the clip below.
