*Nick Cannon, father to 12 children, recently shared insights into how his rapid journey to parenthood was shaped by personal struggles following his 2016 divorce from Mariah Carey.
In a new interview with The Breakfast Club, he described his mindset at the time as carefree, stating, “It was more about like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna just live life and have fun and whatever happens happens. I can handle it.’” The 44-year-old entertainer now believes this approach stemmed from unprocessed trauma, which led to decisions he might have reconsidered with deeper reflection.
Looking back, Cannon wonders if greater self-awareness could have altered his path. “Being almost 45 now,” he said, “I could sit back and like, yeah, if I would have thought the process through a little bit more and took time to actually do the inner work, things might have been a little different in certain scenarios.”

He acknowledges that healing post-divorce might have slowed his pace, noting, “I probably would have took my time in a lot other scenarios.” Cannon also admitted that his choices sometimes perpetuated pain, saying, “Now, you’re leaving trauma every step of the way instead of fixing it from its origin.”
Despite these reflections, Cannon remains steadfast in his conviction that his children were born from meaningful connections. “I’ve always said this, every child that I had was made out of love. And there were strong relationships,” he explained. When asked if introspection would have changed the number of children he has, he responded candidly, “I don’t know.”
Cannon’s family includes twins Moroccan and Monroe with Carey; sons Golden Sagon, Rise Messiah, and daughter Powerful Queen with Brittany Bell; twins Zion Mixolydian, Zillion Heir, and daughter Beautiful Zeppelin with Abby De La Rosa; son Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi; daughter Onyx Ice Cole with LaNisha Cole; and son Zen (who passed away in 2021) and daughter Halo Marie with Alyssa Scott.
In a recent interview with Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi, he discussed how fatherhood, especially to his five daughters, has reshaped his perspective on relationships. “When you have five daughters and you’re like, ‘All right, I at least want to be able to be true and honest,’” he said, hoping they “learn from my mistakes and not date people like their dad.”
