*Muni Long is breaking her silence on a health crisis that brought her to the edge of survival, and the details are nothing short of staggering.
The Grammy winner sat with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America” to walk through the events that led to a double lung transplant. Weeks before the surgery, her medical team had delivered a blunt assessment: she had roughly one week to live.
Long’s history with lupus stretches back to 2014. The chronic autoimmune disease had been a constant presence in her life, but she pushed through it to join Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine Tour” last year. Looking back, she wishes she had made a different call.
“I should have never taken that tour. But there was so much going on in my life where I had to do it,” she said, Ice Cream Convos reports.
Pneumonia developed while she was still on the road, and her body began giving out before the final date even arrived. “I just barely made it. I was only able to do two songs,” she said of her last performance.
Returning home for Thanksgiving brought no relief. Long woke up in the hospital to the most difficult conversation of her life. Her medical team outlined two treatment paths, both with serious implications. “They were kind of like, ‘This is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice or you can get these lungs.'”
The surgery took place about six months ago. Long now says she is fully asymptomatic, with no infections or lingering complications. She also underwent a separate vocal procedure as part of her recovery.
“My voice now is totally different. It’s actually better, should I say?” she said.
A full recovery may still take the better part of a year, per her doctors.
