*Michelle Obama has offered a rare glimpse into how her daughter Malia Obama navigates her growing career in the film industry, emphasizing that she prefers to keep her professional world separate from her family.
Speaking on her IMO podcast alongside co-host Craig Robinson, Michelle explained during a conversation with filmmaker Steven Spielberg that Malia does not involve her parents in her work and actively maintains distance from them when it comes to film projects.
Michelle said Malia “will never invite us to anything that she does,” adding that her daughter is intentional about keeping her creative space independent from her family life.
Malia, who works professionally under the name Malia Ann, is focused on building her own identity in filmmaking. She has been steadily developing her career in the industry, including writing work on Donald Glover’s series “Swarm” and directing the 2023 short film “The Heart.”
The conversation also touched on Barack Obama’s connection to the entertainment world, particularly through his friendship with Spielberg. Michelle added humor to the discussion, joking about her husband’s impatience when he cannot view Spielberg’s projects early.
“My husband is a bully to you when it comes to your movies,” she said: “I always reprimand him … because you haven’t let him see [your latest film] and he’s very mad about that.”
“Yeah, he said if he wasn’t among the first to see it, he was going to watch it only on an iPhone,” Steven shared, with Michelle adding: “Which he knows would irritate you,” as Steven replied: “And he said he wouldn’t watch it horizontally, he’d only watch it vertically.”
“But he got to come on set for this one,” Spielberg added, referring to his upcoming film “Disclosure Day,” and Michelle noted that Barack “had a ball” visiting the set.
“It was great. It was, of course, for my cast, it was a bit of a religious experience because in walks this iconic president who comes onto our set,” Steven said. “To me, he’s a good friend, to all of us, we know each other so well. But on set, the kids didn’t know Barack except from what he’s done for the world and who he represents.”
“Disclosure Day” is scheduled for release on June 12.
