*Michelle Obama has expressed her support for her daughter Malia’s decision to drop the “Obama” surname in her professional work, highlighting her and Sasha’s drive to carve their own paths.
Malia, now 25, credited herself as Malia Ann for her directorial debut, the short film “The Heart,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. The 18-minute feature, starring Tunde Adebimpe and Latonya Borsay, explores themes of grief, forgiveness, and tenderness. Malia described it as a story “about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret” that “works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things,” as shared in a Sundance “Meet the Artist” video.
In a recent episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast with Kate and Oliver Hudson, Michelle Obama reflected on her daughters’ quest for independence. “Our daughters are 25 and 23. They definitely went through a period in their teen years where it was the push away … [where] you’re trying to distinguish yourself,” she said, ABC News reports.
“It is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world, and they don’t want people to assume that they don’t work hard, that they’re just naturally, just handed things. They’re very sensitive to that—they want to be their own people,” Obama added.
Michelle noted that Malia’s choice to use her middle name, Ann, was a deliberate step to establish her own identity. “Malia, who started in film, I mean, her first project, she took off her last name, and we were like, they’re still going to know it’s you, Malia,” she said. “But we respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.”

Barack Obama echoed this sentiment in October on The Pivot Podcast, recalling Malia’s wish for audiences to view “The Heart” without preconceptions tied to her last name. “‘You do know they’ll know who you are,’” he told her, to which she replied, “You know what? I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association [with the Obama last name].”
Malia’s film career builds on her experience as an intern on HBO’s “Girls,” a writer for Donald Glover’s “Swarm” on Prime Video, and a production assistant on “Extant.” Despite criticism labeling her a “nepo baby,” her parents admire her determination to prove herself.
Michelle also shared that Malia and Sasha, now 23, have grown to appreciate their upbringing. “They understand us as full human beings now, in the same way that I think I discovered that about my parents when I went away to college,” she said.
