*The Yorkshire farm where Melanie ‘Mel B’ Brown now wakes up is a world away from the Los Angeles mansion she once called home, both geographically and emotionally. The woman known to millions as Scary Spice turns 50 on May 29, and she’s greeting the milestone with a blend of gratitude and hard-won peace.
In 2014, Brown reached what she calls her lowest point, swallowing nearly 200 aspirin in an attempt to end her life. Looking back, she asks her younger self, “What were you thinking? That the world or your friends and family would be better off without you?” That moment led to a public reckoning in her 2018 memoir “Brutally Honest,” a divorce, and a return to her hometown of Leeds in 2019 with “barely any money in the bank.”
Therapy, and especially EMDR, a technique that processes trauma without extensive talking, became a lifeline. “I have good days. I have bad days,” Brown shared with Us Magazine, but adds that the coping tools she’s learned mean she will “never go to that dark place again.”
Brown now serves as a patron for Women’s Aid and hopes to launch a foundation for abuse survivors.
“I’m getting to know myself more and more… I’ve managed to figure out my little road to a peaceful place,” she says, describing candle-lit nights, music, and long phone-free walks on her 15-acre property as part of her daily reset.

Falling in love when she least expected it
Romance was not on the agenda when longtime family friend and hairstylist Rory McPhee began nursing her famously curly hair back to health after she left her abusive marriage. “Melanie, I’m not going anywhere. Because I absolutely love you,” he told her, a declaration that pierced her doubts about trust. Brown says McPhee is “so kind” and makes her feel “safe,” a sensation she once believed was impossible. Wedding plans are underway, albeit slowly; farm chores and motherhood to Phoenix, 26, Angel, 18, and Madison, 13, still come first.
Returning to the spotlight on her own terms
Five years after leaving the United States, Brown rejoins the judges’ panel for “America’s Got Talent” as the NBC talent show celebrates its 20th season. This time around, she negotiated an open visa and the freedom to fly back to Leeds whenever she needs a “brain break.” Her verdict on being back in Los Angeles: “I’m falling in love with it again because it’s on my terms, with a lot of freedom, self-love and self-care.”
During her original 2013–18 tenure, Brown hid the turmoil at home. Now the actress-singer treats the AGT set like a victory lap, one where she can joke with Howie, Heidi, and Simon all day and feel happy going home at night.
Embracing 50 and whatever comes next
Brown’s birthday will be bittersweet; she always spent May 28 celebrating with her late father, Martin, before celebrating her day on May 29. She isn’t planning a lavish bash, too much pressure, she insists, but she does plan on celebrating life’s quieter rewards. “I’m resilient. And I don’t take things for granted,” she says. And when asked if the next decade holds any unfulfilled dreams, she notes her desire to amplify her work for women in crisis.
“I like myself. So 50, even though it’s a big thing, I’m like, bring it on.”
