*McDonald’s is leaning into nostalgia as the country prepares to mark America’s 250th birthday.
The chain returned its fried apple pie to participating restaurants nationwide on June 23. Customers can order the dessert for a limited time from the all-day menu.
The fried apple pie disappeared from McDonald’s regular menu in 1992 when the chain introduced a baked alternative in response to shifting consumer tastes. Decades later, some fans continue to push for the dessert’s permanent return. A Change.org petition urges McDonald’s to add the fried apple pie back to the menu year-round.
“There are certain things that just take you back – and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them. It’s something that people love and remember from growing up,” said Eric Cochran, McDonald’s Owner/Operator.

“When Ray Kroc was trying to come up with a dessert for McDonald’s, my Grandad, Litton Cochran, suggested a Fried Apple Pie as a classic that people would love. My Grandmom, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe. Bringing the Fried Apple Pie back for fans this summer to celebrate America’s 250th just feels right,” he added.
The company is turning the pie’s return into a roadside attraction. McDonald’s unveiled a 35-foot fried apple pie monument in Joliet, Illinois, just outside Chicago.
The display debuted June 23 at 920 N. Broadway St. and will remain there through July 4. The installation stands along Route 66, linking the desert to one of the country’s most recognizable highways.
