*LeBron James confirmed he will exercise his $52.6MM option for a historic 23rd NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, but a statement from his agent, Rich Paul, has stirred the league.
According to Hoops Rumors, Paul’s announcement, which suggested James would evaluate the Lakers’ offseason moves to ensure a championship-caliber team, caught rival franchises by surprise, hinting at a possible trade request if the team falls short.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,” Paul said in a statement. “We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
As the Bleacher Report points out, despite still performing at an elite level, his advancing age poses a concern. With James set to turn 41 during the 2025-26 campaign, he’s unlikely to be a central figure in the franchise’s long-term plans.
“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future,” Paul said. “We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

On the Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed that Paul had informed the Lakers about the statement beforehand, but other teams were unprepared.
“When this statement came out, I began to call teams,” Windhorst said. “I identified the handful of teams that I could see LeBron trying to be traded to… and they were all caught flat-footed by this.” He noted that Cleveland, often speculated as a potential destination for James to end his career, recently made moves like trading for Lonzo Ball and re-signing Sam Merrill, signaling no intent to pursue the four-time champion.
Trading James is no simple task, as his no-trade clause and sizable contract make any potential deal difficult, even during the offseason, when teams typically have greater cap space to work with. Windhorst remains skeptical about a trade materializing, stating, “There’s a few players in the league you can trade LeBron for in a one-on-one scenario… I’ve found nothing indicating there was anything afoot here.”
