*The New York Knicks are shaking up their coaching search with a bold and unprecedented consideration: Dawn Staley, the celebrated head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team, SI.com reports.
Following the departure of Tom Thibodeau after the 2024 season, the Knicks are exploring new leadership options, and Staley’s name has emerged as a serious contender. Sources indicate that the franchise has already initiated discussions with her regarding the role.
Staley, a towering figure in women’s basketball, has transformed South Carolina into a dominant force since taking the helm in 2008. With a remarkable win percentage exceeding 75%, she has guided the Gamecocks to three national championships and seven Final Four appearances.
Her coaching prowess is undeniable, but as Sports Illustrated points out, some question whether her success in women’s college basketball can translate to the high-stakes world of the NBA.
A Philadelphia native born on May 4, 1970, Staley’s basketball credentials extend beyond coaching. As a point guard for the Virginia Cavaliers from 1988 to 1992, she set the NCAA record for steals, along with school and ACC records for points and assists, respectively. Her professional career included eight seasons in the WNBA, primarily with the Charlotte Sting, after being drafted ninth overall in 1999.

Staley also represented the U.S. women’s national team, securing three Olympic gold medals as a player from 1996 to 2004 and coaching the team to gold in 2021. She remains the only individual to earn the Naismith Award as both a player and a coach.
If Staley were to join the Knicks, her appointment would mark a historic milestone, making her the first woman to serve as an NBA head coach. Such a move could redefine her legacy as one of the most influential figures in sports history.
