*KBLA Talk 1580 is celebrating a major milestone. The Los Angeles-based talk radio station, founded by media entrepreneur and broadcaster Tavis Smiley, is marking its fifth anniversary after half a decade of delivering news, information, cultural commentary, and community-focused programming to listeners throughout Southern California and beyond.
Since launching on Juneteenth in 2021, KBLA Talk 1580 has grown into one of the nation’s most prominent Black-owned talk radio platforms, reaching nearly 12 million listeners and providing a forum for discussions centered on politics, social justice, culture, economics and issues affecting communities of color.
A Mission Rooted in Community
Smiley launched the station with a clear purpose: to create a trusted media outlet that would inform, educate and empower listeners while addressing issues often overlooked by mainstream media.
Over the past five years, KBLA has built a loyal audience by combining news coverage, civic engagement and community outreach with a lineup of nationally recognized hosts and thought leaders.
The station’s programming has focused on providing listeners with practical information while encouraging deeper conversations about policy, culture and the future of Black America.
That mission has resonated with audiences across Southern California and helped establish KBLA as a significant voice in talk radio.

National Recognition for Tavis Smiley
The anniversary celebration comes amid another achievement for Smiley.
The veteran broadcaster was recently ranked No. 14 on Talkers Magazine‘s 2026 “Heavy Hundred” list, one of the industry’s most respected rankings of influential talk media personalities.
Smiley was once again the highest-ranked Black talk radio personality on the list, underscoring his continued influence in national media.
“Five years ago, on Juneteenth, we launched KBLA Talk 1580, with the goal of providing news and information to a part of Los Angeles that had been ignored or pushed to the side for decades,” Smiley said in a statement.
“We’re now syndicated in almost 50 markets across the United States with more growth on the horizon. The best is truly yet to come.”
Support From Influential Voices
The station’s impact has drawn praise from prominent political and cultural figures.
Philosopher, activist and former presidential candidate Dr. Cornel West credited the station with helping fill what he described as a critical need in American media.
“Tavis Smiley’s programming fills a content vacuum across the United States and is needed more now than ever,” West said. “Under Tavis’ bold leadership, KBLA and its program hosts have helped to influence, educate, and engage previously marginalized people across this country.”
Former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., who hosts “The Jesse Jackson Jr. Show” on the station, described KBLA as a historic achievement in Black-owned media.
“What Tavis Smiley is building with KBLA is nothing short of historic: a Black-owned, Black-operated talk radio station that gives our community a seat at the microphone and a voice in the conversation,” Jackson said.

A Strong Lineup Fuels Growth
A key component of the station’s success has been its roster of hosts, whose programs cover politics, entertainment, social issues, sports, business and community affairs.
The station’s weekday lineup includes:
• “First Things First” with Dominique DiPrima
• “The Tavis Smiley Show”
• “The Jesse Jackson Jr. Show”
• “The D.L. Hughley Afternoon Show”
• “A More Perfect Union” with Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey
• “The Black Pack” with Adrianne Shropshire
• “Voice of Reason” with Zo Williams
Weekend programming expands the station’s reach through discussions focused on health, faith, entrepreneurship, relationships, culture and public affairs.
The station says its diverse lineup reflects the interests and experiences of the communities it serves while creating space for meaningful dialogue and solutions-oriented conversations.
Looking Ahead
Broadcasting at 50,000 watts, KBLA Talk 1580 occupies a unique place in Los Angeles radio history as the heritage station that once served as the original home of KDAY.
Today, the station continues to evolve while remaining committed to its founding mission of providing trusted voices, relevant information and impactful conversations.
As KBLA celebrates five years on the air, station leadership says the focus remains on expanding its reach, strengthening its connection to listeners and continuing to serve as a platform for information, empowerment and community engagement.
For a station born from the belief that underserved communities deserve a stronger voice, the fifth anniversary represents not only a milestone but also the beginning of its next chapter.
