*Karla Sofía Gascón has addressed her withdrawal from the Emilia Pérez Oscar campaign following backlash over resurfaced social media posts.
The controversy erupted after writer Sarah Hagi published screenshots of offensive posts from Gascón’s now-deactivated X account. Gascón has continuously apologized and defended herself against allegations of racism, antisemitism, and xenophobia, including in a recent hourlong CNN en Español interview.
The Spanish actress apologized on Instagram to those she “hurt along the way” and stated she would remain silent to let the film speak for itself. Her statement follows Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard’s recent remarks condemning her past tweets and severing ties with her.
“Following Jacques interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference,” Gascón wrote. “I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way.”
Audiard condemned Gascón’s tweets in an interview with Deadline. He acknowledged that the situation had affected their professional relationship and noted that she needed space to reflect on her actions.

Audiard said he hasn’t “spoken to her, and I don’t want to.”
He added, “She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing. Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this, too, is why she’s harming people who were very close to her.”
“Emilia Pérez,” a musical and crime drama about a Mexican drug trafficker seeking gender reassignment surgery, has earned 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, with Gascón making history as the first openly trans-identifying male nominated for Best Actress. She was initially scheduled to attend key events as part of her Oscars campaign but will now miss them as Netflix has stopped covering Gascón’s travel and styling expenses during award season, Variety reports.

Despite apologizing for her comments, Gascón has been managing the fallout on her own, without the support of Netflix or her PR team. Sources indicate that communication between Gascón, Netflix, and her PR firm has ceased, with all interactions now handled through her United Talent Agency representative.
Gascón initially vowed to stay in the Oscar race but has now taken a step back in hopes that the film will be judged on its own merits.

Many believe that liberal Hollywood and The Academy initially championed Karla Sofía Gascón’s nomination as part of a performative push for inclusivity, using the “trans card” to bolster their progressive image. However, as controversy swirls around Gascón, it now appears that the same industry that elevated her is scrambling to distance itself—desperately searching for a way to deny the star the Best Actress award without openly acknowledging the real issue at hand.
The timing of this so-called “cancel culture” backlash seems all too convenient, leading many to suspect that The Academy is caught in its own hypocrisy. Despite their relentless virtue signaling, it’s clear they do recognize the fundamental difference between men and women—because they know awarding Gascón the Oscar would ignite a scandal they aren’t willing to face.
