Jill Scott Says She ‘Hated’ Filming This Tyler Perry Scene
*Jill Scott recently got candid about one of the most painful scenes she’s ever filmed. During an interview on Angie Martinez’s “IRL” podcast, she admitted she “hated” the airplane scene in Tyler Perry’s 2007 film “Why Did I Get Married?”
Scott played Sheila, a woman constantly mocked and mistreated by her husband Mike, played by Richard T. Jones. The role required her to wear a fat suit and portray deep emotional trauma related to body image, abuse, and self-worth.
The Plane Scene Was as Brutal Behind the Scenes as Onscreen
The scene in question shows Sheila being humiliated during a flight when her husband refuses to sit next to her, and a passenger complains about her size. She’s ultimately asked to switch flights.
But Scott revealed the emotional sting started before the cameras even rolled.
“The scene on the plane, Tyler [Perry] had extras make fun of me […] when I got on the plane. They were just going back and forth, making jokes about Sheila’s weight.”
She said the jokes felt deeply personal—especially since she was already in a vulnerable state wearing a fat suit.

Jill Scott Felt the Directing Choice Was ‘A Little Abusive’
Scott didn’t hold back in her reaction to the method Perry used to create realism.
“But the folks on the flight really went in on fat jokes. It sucked….I felt like it was [a little abusive]. Sorry, Tyler, I hated that sh*t…sincerely hated that.”
She said she spoke to Perry “once or twice” about it, but the experience left her emotionally depleted. Still, she found a silver lining through self-affirmation.
“I decided that I am not fat, but I have some. And it made me feel better… Like, you’re not gonna define me as a ‘thing.’ I’m multicolor, I’m multi-dimensional.”
Despite the Pain, Scott Praised Her Co-Star
While the filming experience was tough, Scott had nothing but love for co-star Richard T. Jones. He played her on-screen abuser, but in real life, she says he’s the complete opposite.
“Richard is literally one of the nicest people on the planet. If I saw him, I’d bite him and hug him.”
Scott returned for the 2010 sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?” and is reportedly signed on for a third installment, which Tyler Perry confirmed is in development.

Fans Divided Over Tyler Perry’s Directing Tactics
Scott’s comments stirred up reactions across social media. Some fans criticized Perry’s approach, calling it emotionally manipulative or borderline abusive. Others defended it as a tool that created a raw, unforgettable performance.
The moment shines a light on the emotional costs of “method” tactics—especially when used on actors from marginalized groups who already carry societal baggage.
Scott Reflects on Her Growth and New Music
The interview comes as Jill Scott prepares to release her sixth studio album, “To Whom This May Concern,” dropping February 13, 2026. She says the music reflects her journey, including themes of self-love and resilience.
Her story is a reminder: Even seasoned artists like Scott are still navigating pain, growth, and ownership of their narratives—both onscreen and off.
